Mauricio Pochettino Sets Ambitious Goals as New USMNT Coach
Mauricio Pochettino, recently appointed as the new head coach of the US men’s national soccer team, has outlined his bold vision for the team’s future. Pochettino, whose previous managerial roles include Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Paris Saint-Germain, expressed a clear intent to elevate the team’s performance to match the world’s elite.
Pochettino’s appointment follows the departure of Gregg Berhalter, who was dismissed after failing to advance the team past the group stage of the Copa America held in the U.S. earlier this year. The lengthy negotiation process to secure Pochettino’s services concluded just before the USMNT’s 1-1 draw against New Zealand in a friendly match in Cincinnati. The result extended the team’s winless streak to four games.
Christian Pulisic, who scored the opening goal in the recent match, is currently the team’s standout player. Following the game, Pulisic voiced his concerns about the team’s mentality and culture, emphasizing the need for significant change.
Pochettino acknowledged Pulisic’s frustrations and stressed the importance of instilling a competitive spirit within the squad. He highlighted that while the team possesses considerable talent, a stronger competitive edge is essential for success.
The Argentine coach will oversee his first games in charge during friendlies scheduled for October 12 against Panama in Austin, and an away match against Mexico three days later. Looking ahead, Pochettino’s ultimate objective is to guide the USMNT to a strong showing in the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Reflecting on the significance of the World Cup, Pochettino shared his excitement about participating in such a major event and expressed a desire to have the team perform at its best.
Many of the USMNT’s key players, including Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tyler Adams, are currently competing in top European leagues. Pochettino emphasized the importance of balancing his focus between the U.S. and European soccer scenes to ensure the team’s success.
Pochettino’s extensive European experience includes managing Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Paris Saint-Germain, where he achieved notable successes, including winning the Ligue 1 title. His recent role at Chelsea, though short-lived, included securing a European competition spot.
The recent hiring of Emma Hayes as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team has been celebrated, with Hayes bringing a wealth of experience and success from her tenure at Chelsea. Pochettino expressed admiration for the U.S. women’s program and acknowledged the challenge of matching their achievements.
Although surpassing the U.S. women’s four World Cup victories may be a tall order, Pochettino’s immediate focus is on steering the men’s team to a significant performance in 2026.
Regarding the timing of his appointment on Friday the 13th, Pochettino, with a light-hearted tone, reassured that any superstitions were inconsequential, as he had signed his contract prior to the presentation date.
