The Royal & Ancient (R&A) has made a significant announcement regarding LIV Golf players and their participation in The Open Championship. Starting this year, the top LIV Golf player will secure a spot at the prestigious tournament. This decision aims to provide pathways for talented golfers across various professional tours, including those competing in the LIV Golf League.
LIV Golf, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, emerged as a rival to traditional tours like the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. Despite its financial backing and high-profile signings, LIV Golf faced challenges gaining recognition from major championships due to its controversial funding sources.
Recently, there have been shifts in how majors approach eligibility for LIV golfers. The USGA also offered an exemption for one top-performing player into the US Open at Oakmont Country Club this June. These moves signal efforts by major tournaments like The Open and USGA.

The R&A’s decision ensures that one of LIV Golf’s standout performers will compete at Royal Portrush during The Open Championship from July 17 to 20. This opportunity is reserved for the highest-ranked golfer within the top five of LIV’s individual season standings—provided they haven’t already secured entry through other exemptions.
Mark Darbon, CEO of the R&A, highlighted that The Open aims to provide pathways for talented golfers across various professional tours while maintaining competitive integrity at major events like these golf majors.
Including top performers from multiple circuits can ensure that these major championships feature some of the world’s best talent. It may help bridge gaps between traditional tours and newer entities. The Masters and PGA Championship continues with case-by-case exemptions rather than direct spots based on standings like those used by R&A Exemptions or USGA Exemptions.
