Jared Goff delivered an outstanding performance on Monday night, setting a new NFL record by completing all 18 of his passes in the Detroit Lions‘ 42-29 victory against the Seattle Seahawks.
Goff’s record-breaking achievement surpassed the previous mark held by Kurt Warner, who completed 10 consecutive passes for Arizona in 2005.
The Lions established a commanding lead, going up by 15 points with just over five minutes remaining. Goff connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown on a high pass that St. Brown skillfully caught in the end zone.
In addition to Goff’s precision, Jahmyr Gibbs contributed significantly, scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter and rushing for 78 yards. David Montgomery opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, capping off a 93-yard drive that consumed more than seven minutes in the first quarter.
Seattle quarterback Geno Smith threw for 395 yards, completing 38 of 56 passes, including a 9-yard touchdown to rookie tight end AJ Barner. However, his day ended on a sour note with an interception in the end zone, sealing Seattle’s first loss of the season.
The Seahawks, facing challenges with a depleted defense, struggled to contain the Lions’ offensive onslaught. Smith acknowledged the team’s resilience, stating that even while trailing, there remained a belief in a potential comeback.
DK Metcalf was a standout for Seattle with seven receptions for 104 yards, although he also lost a crucial fumble at the Detroit 37-yard line early in the game.
In a unique twist, Goff not only threw two touchdown passes but also caught one himself, marking the first time in his career he registered a reception. St. Brown threw a 7-yard pass to Goff during a trick play, adding another layer to their dynamic connection.
Despite a strong performance, Goff faced a setback when he was sacked for a safety in the game’s closing moments, allowing Seattle to cut the lead to 13 points.
The Lions improved to 3-1 with the win, while the Seahawks fell to the same record, unable to overcome their defensive shortcomings. Seattle’s coach reflected on the need for improvement, emphasizing the gap between their current performance and their aspirations.
The game showcased the Lions’ offensive firepower and Goff’s remarkable accuracy, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
