Conor Gallagher is set to join Atletico Madrid after the Chelsea midfielder accepted the Spanish club’s £33 million offer. Despite uncertainties earlier about Gallagher’s willingness to relocate, he confirmed his decision to Atletico officials on Sunday night.
At 24 years old, Gallagher is preparing to leave Stamford Bridge, marking the end of an 18-year association with Chelsea. This decision follows the acceptance of a contract from Atletico Madrid, where he will soon undergo a medical examination and finalize his contract details.
Chelsea, which had proposed a two-year extension with a possible additional year, couldn’t sway Gallagher. He found the terms and his potential role in the squad underwhelming, particularly with the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca. Maresca’s tactical approach, which emphasizes possession, didn’t align with Gallagher’s playing style, and it became clear he wouldn’t be a regular in the starting lineup.
Having played five matches in Euro 2024, Gallagher’s move comes as his contract with Chelsea nears its final year. Chelsea’s preference to sell him to a team outside of England facilitated a more economical deal for Atletico Madrid, steering clear of competing English clubs.
