Denzel Ward, the Cleveland Browns‘ standout cornerback, has resumed practice following a recent concussion. This marks his first return to the field since suffering his fifth recorded concussion in the NFL.
Ward, who is currently in the league’s concussion protocol, has progressed to the final phase, allowing him to participate in practice sessions. The 27-year-old defender sustained the injury on August 12 during a play where he collided with the ground while covering wide receiver Elijah Moore. Despite wearing the mandated Guardian cap designed to mitigate head injuries, Ward was affected by the impact.
Ward, drafted by the Browns in 2018 as the No. 4 overall pick out of Ohio State, has been a key player for the team, making three Pro Bowl appearances. However, his history of concussions raises concerns. In addition to the recent injury, Ward has had at least five concussions during his professional career, including one during a preseason game last year that delayed his participation in the season opener.
Despite these challenges, Ward has maintained a positive outlook. He has expressed that he focuses on playing hard and remains optimistic about managing his health.
The Browns are hopeful Ward will be ready for their season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on September 8, where he is expected to face off against star receiver CeeDee Lamb. Lamb recently signed a four-year contract extension worth $136 million.
Ward’s return is a boost for the Browns, but the team continues to manage other injury concerns. Right tackle Jack Conklin, who is recovering from a season-ending knee injury sustained last year, was absent from practice during the media-accessible portion. Conklin had resumed practice earlier this week but is being carefully integrated back into full activity. Left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr., who is also recovering from a knee injury, has been activated from the injured list but remains sidelined for now.
As the league continues to emphasize player safety, including updated helmet technology and improved injury protocols, Ward’s situation underscores the ongoing efforts to balance the demands of the game with player well-being.
