Brant Dunshea Appointed Interim CEO of the British Horseracing Authority

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has named Brant Dunshea as its interim Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2025. Dunshea will take over the role from Julie Harrington, who will step down after serving a four-year term, with her resignation taking effect at the end of December.

Dunshea, who has been with the BHA since 2015, will continue to serve in his current position as Chief Regulatory Officer (CRO) while taking on the additional responsibilities of the acting CEO. His appointment comes as the search for a permanent CEO remains underway. Lord Allen of Kensington, who recently became the BHA’s Chair, will be closely involved in the recruitment process during this transition period.

Having been promoted to CRO in 2018, Dunshea brings nearly a decade of experience at the BHA to the role. Before joining the BHA, he worked in senior positions within the Australian horseracing industry for 20 years, giving him valuable insight into both international and domestic regulatory frameworks.

The move comes as the BHA continues to implement important industry initiatives. This includes its recent collaboration with the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) to strengthen equine anti-doping measures. Additionally, the BHA has expanded its leadership team with new appointments, including Katie Carr as Head of Environmental Sustainability and Tom Baker as Head of Social Impact.

Dunshea’s appointment as interim CEO also aligns with the BHA’s ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of those working in the horseracing sector, demonstrated by the introduction of a new online safeguarding and welfare education guide for industry professionals.

As the BHA works towards appointing a permanent CEO, Dunshea will guide the organization during a crucial time for the industry.
